00:00:11.380 --> 00:00:15.360
Word has a great feature called background
removal that can be used to remove parts of

00:00:15.360 --> 00:00:18.430
your picture, giving it a transparent background.

00:00:18.430 --> 00:00:23.400
Not only is this a useful tool—it also opens
up tons of creative possibilities.

00:00:23.400 --> 00:00:24.890
Here's how it works.

00:00:24.890 --> 00:00:28.170
First, make sure the image is selected.

00:00:28.170 --> 00:00:32.610
Then click the Remove Background command on
the Format tab.

00:00:32.610 --> 00:00:37.590
Don't worry if the picture doesn't look good
yet because we're going to make a few adjustments.

00:00:37.590 --> 00:00:41.770
The first thing you should do is click & drag
the selection handles so the foreground areas

00:00:41.770 --> 00:00:43.010
are inside the box.

00:00:43.010 --> 00:00:48.340
Right now, the background areas are highlighted
bright pink or magenta, but when we're done,

00:00:48.340 --> 00:00:52.110
they'll be removed from the image all together.

00:00:52.110 --> 00:00:56.030
With some pictures, Word needs a little help
deciding which areas to remove, and which

00:00:56.030 --> 00:00:57.610
areas to keep.

00:00:57.610 --> 00:01:00.120
In this picture, we have a couple problems.

00:01:00.120 --> 00:01:04.470
Most of the roses and also the stems are being
marked as part of the background, so we need

00:01:04.470 --> 00:01:10.140
to tell Word to keep those areas in the picture.

00:01:10.140 --> 00:01:17.020
Click Mark Areas to Keep... then click and
drag to create a line over the areas you want.

00:01:17.020 --> 00:01:23.240
As you can see, Word will readjust the image
while you work.

00:01:23.240 --> 00:01:26.390
Now it's including part of the background
by accident.

00:01:26.390 --> 00:01:33.130
So we need to mark this area to remove.

00:01:33.130 --> 00:01:36.340
That looks better.

00:01:36.340 --> 00:01:40.690
Go through the image and keep marking areas
as needed.

00:01:40.690 --> 00:01:46.140
If you make a mistake, all you have to do
is click Delete Mark... then click the mark

00:01:46.140 --> 00:01:49.860
you want to remove.

00:01:49.860 --> 00:01:54.079
At this point, our foreground subjects look
good, and the entire background is highlighted

00:01:54.079 --> 00:01:55.729
magenta.

00:01:55.729 --> 00:01:59.200
Notice that I've left these two roses in the
background, which is going to remove them

00:01:59.200 --> 00:02:01.409
from the image too.

00:02:01.409 --> 00:02:05.359
This is just another way of using the feature
to customize your image.

00:02:05.359 --> 00:02:11.900
You decide what's part of the background and
what's not, so it's completely up to you.

00:02:11.900 --> 00:02:14.890
When you're ready, you just need to exit the
tool.

00:02:14.890 --> 00:02:19.860
Click the Keep Changes button here... and
that's it!

00:02:19.860 --> 00:02:23.780
Now that the picture has a transparent background,
there are lots of interesting things we can

00:02:23.780 --> 00:02:24.940
do with it.

00:02:24.940 --> 00:02:31.670
For example, we could place it on top of a
shape... or even another picture.

00:02:31.670 --> 00:02:34.860
The image also works well placed next to other
objects.

00:02:34.860 --> 00:02:40.000
Here, it really contributes to the professional
look of the design.

00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:43.770
If you notice that you've missed something,
you can always edit the picture again by returning

00:02:43.770 --> 00:02:48.040
to the Remove Background command.

00:02:48.040 --> 00:02:51.330
With this very special feature, you can do
things in Word that you would normally do

00:02:51.330 --> 00:02:53.560
in a photo editing program.

00:02:53.560 --> 00:02:56.120
Now that you know how it works, make sure
you give it a try!
