00:00:00.250 --> 00:00:05.819
Hashtags are really important part of
Twitter, but what exactly is a hashtag anyway?

00:00:05.819 --> 00:00:11.170
Simply put, a hashtag is any word or phrase that's included in a tweet that starts

00:00:11.170 --> 00:00:15.400
with a hashtag symbol (#) which is also
called the pound sign her number symbol.

00:00:15.400 --> 00:00:20.900
When someone includes a hashtag with
their tweet, they're basically categorizing it.

00:00:20.980 --> 00:00:25.840
So, why do people do this?
Well, if you select a hashtag

00:00:25.850 --> 00:00:29.190
you'll see other tweets that include it as
well.

00:00:29.190 --> 00:00:34.910
This is an easy way to see what's
happening on Twitter or follow with a popular topic.

00:00:35.410 --> 00:00:40.340
Since the posts on Twitter are so short, a
hashtag is often abbreviated.

00:00:40.340 --> 00:00:45.790
In this case, we're looking at hashtag #OTD and based on these other tweets, it looks

00:00:45.790 --> 00:00:48.310
like that stands for "On This Date."

00:00:48.310 --> 00:00:52.760
So, on this date in history, all these
different things happened.

00:00:52.760 --> 00:00:56.600
Hashtags also make it easy to join in
and become a part of this bigger conversation.

00:00:56.600 --> 00:01:01.980
To o use the hashtag, just select
the new Tweet button, and you can see in

00:01:01.980 --> 00:01:06.330
this example that since were were already looking
at the #OTD hashtag, it was included automatically.

00:01:06.330 --> 00:01:10.750
Now we'll just type our post.

00:01:10.750 --> 00:01:16.360
And that's it! We just posted a tweet
with the hashtag and that means anyone

00:01:16.360 --> 00:01:20.880
else looking at tweets related to the
hashtag can find it easily.

00:01:20.880 --> 00:01:25.990
Hashtags are also an easy way to see
what's popular or trending on Twitter.

00:01:25.990 --> 00:01:29.939
In this example we're using the Twitter
app for iPhone, so we're going to select

00:01:29.939 --> 00:01:33.310
the search box to see trending topics.

00:01:33.310 --> 00:01:37.829
The process should be pretty similar if you're using Twitter on different device.

00:01:37.829 --> 00:01:44.040
In a desktop web browser,you'll see
these under Trends.

00:01:44.040 --> 00:01:49.290
Like before, we can select a hashtag to see more tweets about it.

00:01:49.290 --> 00:01:52.060
One other thing we'd like to mention are the search filters.

00:01:52.060 --> 00:01:56.250
If you're using the Twitter app, you'll
select the search filters icon near the top.

00:01:57.720 --> 00:02:01.470
And if you're using Twitter on the desktop, you should be able to click anywhere in the

00:02:01.470 --> 00:02:04.520
search bar to access the same options.

00:02:04.520 --> 00:02:08.450
From here you can narrow down your
results to see only photos about this

00:02:08.450 --> 00:02:10.640
hashtag, or only videos,

00:02:10.640 --> 00:02:14.849
accounts that might be relevant
to this hashtag or even just tweets from

00:02:14.849 --> 00:02:18.910
people you follow that include it.

00:02:18.910 --> 00:02:23.990
Alright! That's all we've got! Those are the basics of hashtags on Twitter.
