00:00:11.090 --> 00:00:15.340
Most publications - even simple ones like
this business card - are made up of several

00:00:15.340 --> 00:00:21.240
different objects, including text boxes, shapes,
and other graphics. Knowing how to arrange

00:00:21.240 --> 00:00:25.730
these objects is an important part of using
Publisher. In this video, we'll take a look

00:00:25.730 --> 00:00:28.080
at several different strategies.

00:00:28.080 --> 00:00:32.260
Let's begin with these four shapes. Right
now, they're all placed kind of randomly on

00:00:32.260 --> 00:00:36.970
the page, but I'd rather have them lined up
in a row. Of course, I could try to line them

00:00:36.970 --> 00:00:40.900
up manually - or I could get Publisher to
do it for me.

00:00:40.900 --> 00:00:45.340
The first thing you'll need to do is select
the objects you want to align. Just hold Shift

00:00:45.340 --> 00:00:51.760
on your keyboard while you click - or click
and drag to make a selection box. When you

00:00:51.760 --> 00:00:55.120
let go, all of the objects will be selected.

00:00:55.120 --> 00:01:01.420
Now we can navigate to the Drawing Tools Format
tab, and then click the Align command. You'll

00:01:01.420 --> 00:01:06.170
have six different options to choose from.
I'm going to go with Align Right, which will

00:01:06.170 --> 00:01:09.610
line the objects up along the right edge.

00:01:09.610 --> 00:01:13.700
That didn't align them to the right side of
the page, though. If you wanted to do that,

00:01:13.700 --> 00:01:20.009
you could go back to the Align command, and
this time, select Relative to Margins. Now

00:01:20.009 --> 00:01:25.369
when we choose the very same option - Align
Right - everything moves to the right margin

00:01:25.369 --> 00:01:29.800
instead. In this example, that's very edge
of the page.

00:01:29.800 --> 00:01:33.619
There's one more thing I'd like to change
that can be done just as easily. Notice how

00:01:33.619 --> 00:01:38.440
the shapes are aligned, but they're not quite
spaced evenly? To fix that, go to the Align

00:01:38.440 --> 00:01:43.340
command again, then choose Distribute Vertically.

00:01:43.340 --> 00:01:45.030
Perfect!

00:01:45.030 --> 00:01:48.990
Now that I have these shapes exactly the way
I want them, I'm going to group them into

00:01:48.990 --> 00:01:54.209
one big object, so they always stay together.
Just make sure you have each of your objects

00:01:54.209 --> 00:01:57.170
selected, then click the Group command.

00:01:57.170 --> 00:02:02.959
Now we have a single grouped object that
you can move or resize any way you like. See

00:02:02.959 --> 00:02:06.459
how it works?

00:02:06.459 --> 00:02:10.610
Let's take a look at one more technique for
arranging objects. This one's really going

00:02:10.610 --> 00:02:17.610
to come in handy for taking the background
I have on the front of my business card - and

00:02:17.819 --> 00:02:24.819
pasting it here on the back. As you can see,
the problem is that it's overlapping the rest

00:02:25.349 --> 00:02:29.959
of the card, no matter where I move it. This
can happen any time you have multiple objects,

00:02:29.959 --> 00:02:32.180
depending on the order they're in.

00:02:32.180 --> 00:02:37.890
To change the order of an object, make sure
it's selected, then go to the Format tab.

00:02:37.890 --> 00:02:42.840
You have two commands to choose from: Bring
Forward, or Send Backward, depending on what

00:02:42.840 --> 00:02:48.950
you need. If I click Send Backward, the image
moves back only one level - basically, behind

00:02:48.950 --> 00:02:53.769
the text box; the shapes on the right are
still obscured. If I click the drop-down arrow

00:02:53.769 --> 00:02:59.239
instead, I can choose Send to Back - and that
takes care of it.

00:02:59.239 --> 00:03:03.299
Now everything is perfectly aligned and in
the right order - without a lot of time and

00:03:03.299 --> 00:03:08.609
effort. Take some time to practice, and you'll
be able to create complex publications too,

00:03:08.609 --> 00:03:15.609
with lots of pictures, shapes, and other objects.
