00:00:11.440 --> 00:00:16.320
PowerPoint has a great feature called background
removal that can be used to remove parts of

00:00:16.320 --> 00:00:19.700
your picture, giving it a transparent background.

00:00:19.700 --> 00:00:24.970
Not only is this a useful tool—it also opens
up tons of creative possibilities.

00:00:24.970 --> 00:00:26.220
Here's how it works.

00:00:26.220 --> 00:00:29.520
First, make sure the image is selected.

00:00:29.520 --> 00:00:34.730
Then click the Remove Background command on
the Format tab.

00:00:34.730 --> 00:00:39.210
Don't worry if the picture doesn't look good
yet because we're going to make a few adjustments.

00:00:39.210 --> 00:00:44.100
The first thing you should do is click & drag
the selection handles so the foreground areas

00:00:44.100 --> 00:00:49.089
are inside the box...

00:00:49.089 --> 00:00:54.350
Right now, the background areas are highlighted
bright pink or magenta, but when we're done,

00:00:54.350 --> 00:00:57.449
they'll be removed from the image all together.

00:00:57.449 --> 00:01:02.120
With some pictures, Power Point needs a little
help deciding which areas to remove, and which

00:01:02.120 --> 00:01:03.320
areas to keep.

00:01:03.320 --> 00:01:06.620
In this picture, we have a couple problems.

00:01:06.620 --> 00:01:11.390
Most of the roses and also the stems are being
marked as part of the background, so we need

00:01:11.390 --> 00:01:15.060
to tell Power Point to keep those areas in
the picture.

00:01:15.060 --> 00:01:22.820
Click Mark Areas to Keep... then click and
drag to create a line over the areas you want.

00:01:22.820 --> 00:01:29.600
As you can see, PowerPoint will readjust the
image while you work.

00:01:29.600 --> 00:01:32.690
Now it's including part of the background
by accident.

00:01:32.690 --> 00:01:40.170
So we need to mark this area to remove.

00:01:40.170 --> 00:01:42.230
That looks better.

00:01:42.230 --> 00:01:46.590
Go through the image and keep marking areas
you need.

00:01:46.590 --> 00:01:51.200
If you make a mistake, all you have to do
is click Delete Mark... then click the mark

00:01:51.200 --> 00:01:52.530
you want to remove.

00:01:52.530 --> 00:01:58.780
At this point, our foreground subjects look
pretty good, and the entire background is

00:01:58.780 --> 00:02:01.280
highlighted magenta.

00:02:01.280 --> 00:02:05.060
Notice that I've left these two roses in the
background, which is going to remove them

00:02:05.060 --> 00:02:06.170
from the image too.

00:02:06.170 --> 00:02:10.479
This is just another way of using the feature
to customize your image.

00:02:10.479 --> 00:02:15.510
You decide what's part of the background and
what's not, so it's completely up to you.

00:02:15.510 --> 00:02:18.480
When you're ready, you just need to exit the
tool.

00:02:18.480 --> 00:02:23.440
Click the Keep Changes button here... and
that's it!

00:02:23.440 --> 00:02:27.500
Now that the picture has a transparent background,
there are lots of interesting things we can

00:02:27.500 --> 00:02:28.500
do with it.

00:02:28.500 --> 00:02:35.890
For example, we could place it on top of a
shape... or even another picture.

00:02:35.890 --> 00:02:39.780
If you notice that you've missed something,
you can always edit the picture again by returning

00:02:39.780 --> 00:02:41.950
to the Remove Background command.

00:02:41.950 --> 00:02:47.459
With this very special feature, you can do
things in PowerPoint that you would normally

00:02:47.459 --> 00:02:49.810
do in a photo editing program.

00:02:49.810 --> 00:02:52.580
Now that you know how it works, make sure
you give it a try!
