00:00:08.000 --> 00:00:12.549
Pictures, text boxes, and shapes are all
considered objects in PowerPoint.

00:00:12.549 --> 00:00:16.820
Sometimes you may need a little help arranging these objects to get your

00:00:16.820 --> 00:00:19.180
slides to look exactly the way you want.

00:00:19.180 --> 00:00:23.340
For example, take a look at the different
pictures on this slide.

00:00:23.340 --> 00:00:28.800
Right now they're placed kind of randomly but I'd rather have them lined up in a row.

00:00:28.810 --> 00:00:34.910
Of course, I could try to do this manually or I can get PowerPoint to do it for me!

00:00:34.910 --> 00:00:40.100
The first thing you need to do is select
the objects.

00:00:40.100 --> 00:00:46.920
To select all of them at once, just hold Shift on your keyboard while you click.

00:00:46.920 --> 00:00:51.820
Next, we'll go the Format tab and click
the Align command.

00:00:51.820 --> 00:00:58.579
You have several different options to choose from ranging from vertical to horizontal alignment.

00:00:58.579 --> 00:01:03.219
You can also choose whether to align the
objects to the slide or to each other,

00:01:03.219 --> 00:01:08.350
which is the default setting when
you select multiple objects like this.

00:01:08.350 --> 00:01:12.800
This time I'm going to go with Align Bottom

00:01:12.800 --> 00:01:17.640
And now the objects are aligned with one
another along their bottom edge.

00:01:17.640 --> 00:01:22.060
Note that they didn't move all the way to
the bottom of the slide

00:01:22.060 --> 00:01:24.670
they just moved enough to be aligned with one another.

00:01:24.670 --> 00:01:28.369
Now if we did want to align them with
the side we could

00:01:28.369 --> 00:01:33.420
go back to the Align command and select Align to Slide.

00:01:33.420 --> 00:01:37.659
And now if I click Align Middle

00:01:37.659 --> 00:01:41.470
they move to the exact middle of the slide.

00:01:41.470 --> 00:01:46.380
There's another thing I'd like to change
that can be done just as easily.

00:01:46.420 --> 00:01:50.340
Notice how the shapes are lined up but they're not quite evenly spaced?

00:01:50.340 --> 00:01:53.960
To fix that, we will need to distribute the objects

00:01:53.970 --> 00:02:00.030
First, we'll go back to the Align command
and choose Align Selected Objects.

00:02:00.030 --> 00:02:03.950
That's because we only want to put an
equal amount of space between each picture.

00:02:03.950 --> 00:02:09.560
We don't want to spread them out
equally across the whole slide.

00:02:09.560 --> 00:02:14.060
Next we'll choose Distribute Horizontally

00:02:14.560 --> 00:02:16.800
And there we go!

00:02:16.800 --> 00:02:19.950
Now the pictures have the same amount of space between one another.

00:02:20.920 --> 00:02:25.480
Now that I have these objects
arranged to the way I want,

00:02:25.480 --> 00:02:28.580
I'm going to group them so
that they always stay together.

00:02:28.610 --> 00:02:33.680
Just make sure you have each of your
objects selected, then click the Group command...

00:02:33.680 --> 00:02:36.280
and choose Group.

00:02:36.280 --> 00:02:43.840
Now we had a single grouped object that we can move and resize anyway we want

00:02:43.840 --> 00:02:48.160
See how each shape in the group does the same thing?

00:02:48.580 --> 00:02:55.040
And if you ever want to ungroup your
objects, just select Group>Ungroup.

00:02:56.670 --> 00:02:58.850
You know, I think I'd also like to

00:02:58.850 --> 00:03:07.700
add a new shape to this slide, so I'll go to
the Insert tab and click the Shapes command.

00:03:07.700 --> 00:03:15.410
This one looks pretty good.

00:03:15.410 --> 00:03:22.810
And I'll just select a different shape style to make it look the way I want.

00:03:24.050 --> 00:03:26.230
Hmm...this looks OK

00:03:26.230 --> 00:03:30.550
but what I'd really like is to have the arrow
shape behind all the pictures.

00:03:30.550 --> 00:03:34.670
Right now it's overlapping and we really can't see them very well.

00:03:34.670 --> 00:03:40.100
This can happen any time you have multiple objects, depending on the order they're in.

00:03:40.100 --> 00:03:46.340
To change the order of an object, make
sure its selected, then go to the Format tab.

00:03:46.340 --> 00:03:50.680
You have two commands to choose from:
Bring Forward or Send Backward

00:03:50.680 --> 00:03:52.860
depending on what you need.

00:03:52.870 --> 00:03:57.610
Now you may need to experiment with
these options to find what you're looking for.

00:03:57.610 --> 00:04:03.360
For example if I click Send Backward,
this shape moves back only one level,

00:04:03.360 --> 00:04:08.440
(basically behind one of the pictures)
but the others are still covered up by the arrow.

00:04:09.710 --> 00:04:13.660
Whenever you're working with multiple
objects like this it can be helpful to

00:04:13.660 --> 00:04:15.940
turn on the selection pane.

00:04:15.940 --> 00:04:20.590
From here you can easily see the order
of all the objects on this slide

00:04:20.590 --> 00:04:24.480
and even change their order within the pane if you prefer.

00:04:24.480 --> 00:04:29.250
OK, so it looks like the arrow shape is
still above the other two pictures,

00:04:29.250 --> 00:04:32.150
so I'm going to click the drop-down arrow
here

00:04:32.150 --> 00:04:37.740
and choose Send to Back...and that takes care of it!

00:04:37.740 --> 00:04:40.860
If we we look at the selection pane, we can see that the shape

00:04:40.869 --> 00:04:47.049
was moved to the very bottom, which is
why it appears behind the pictures on the slide.

00:04:47.150 --> 00:04:51.120
Finally, I am going to group these
pictures with the area shape so I can

00:04:51.120 --> 00:04:55.390
resize them and move them exactly where I want without changing any of this

00:04:55.390 --> 00:04:59.720
other formatting I've done.

00:04:59.720 --> 00:05:03.920
OK! Everything is perfectly aligned and
arranged in the right order!

00:05:03.920 --> 00:05:07.240
I'm really happy with the way this slide looks.

00:05:07.249 --> 00:05:11.049
The more you practice using these tools
on your own, the better you'll be at

00:05:11.049 --> 00:05:14.529
working with objects in all kinds of situations.
