00:00:08.490 --> 00:00:13.610
In this video we're going to talk about opening
and saving databases and objects.

00:00:13.610 --> 00:00:18.290
In Access, this works a little bit differently
from other programs like Word or Excel, and

00:00:18.290 --> 00:00:22.710
it's important that you know how it works
before you start editing databases.

00:00:22.710 --> 00:00:25.210
We'll start by opening a database.

00:00:25.210 --> 00:00:29.680
Make sure you're in Backstage view, then click
Open.

00:00:29.680 --> 00:00:33.330
And if there are any recently opened files,
they will appear here.

00:00:33.330 --> 00:00:39.210
But if you don't see the one you're looking
for, just click Browse.

00:00:39.210 --> 00:00:43.880
And then you can double-click your file to
open it.

00:00:43.880 --> 00:00:47.750
You may get a warning message here, so if
you trust the source of the database, then

00:00:47.750 --> 00:00:49.520
click Enable Content.

00:00:49.520 --> 00:00:54.559
[begin zoom out] Earlier I mentioned that
Access is a little bit different from other

00:00:54.559 --> 00:00:59.170
programs, and that's because you're not going
to be editing the database itself, but rather

00:00:59.170 --> 00:01:01.900
the objects within the database.

00:01:01.900 --> 00:01:07.450
Access treats each one of these objects as
separate documents, and each one can be opened,

00:01:07.450 --> 00:01:10.159
saved, and closed individually.

00:01:10.159 --> 00:01:14.420
So you can think of the database as just a
folder of different objects.

00:01:14.420 --> 00:01:17.090
Let's open a few objects.

00:01:17.090 --> 00:01:26.850
Just double-click on each one, and I'm going
to open a table … a query … and I think

00:01:26.850 --> 00:01:34.490
I'll also open a form … and a report.

00:01:34.490 --> 00:01:38.640
Each of these objects now has a tab on the
Document Tabs bar.

00:01:38.640 --> 00:01:42.719
If you make any changes, you'll need to save
the object before you close it.

00:01:42.719 --> 00:01:47.619
You can do that by clicking Save on the Quick
Access Toolbar… and this only saves the

00:01:47.619 --> 00:01:50.969
current object.

00:01:50.969 --> 00:01:56.259
And to close it, you can click the X over
on the right.

00:01:56.259 --> 00:02:01.499
If you want to rename an object, you can just
right-click it from the Navigation pane…

00:02:01.499 --> 00:02:02.939
and select Rename.

00:02:02.939 --> 00:02:07.929
And then type whatever name you want.

00:02:07.929 --> 00:02:15.990
To close the database, click the File tab…
and select Close.

00:02:15.990 --> 00:02:20.280
And in Access, you're not going to be saving
your database because you're saving each object

00:02:20.280 --> 00:02:21.690
individually.

00:02:21.690 --> 00:02:25.690
This may seem a little bit strange at first,
but as long as you remember to think of the

00:02:25.690 --> 00:02:28.980
database as a folder of objects, then you'll
be okay.
