00:00:11.450 --> 00:00:16.580
In this video we're going to talk about opening
and saving databases and objects.

00:00:16.580 --> 00:00:21.271
In Access, this works a little bit differently
from other programs like Word or Excel, and

00:00:21.271 --> 00:00:25.680
it's important that you know how it works
before you start editing databases.

00:00:25.680 --> 00:00:28.180
We'll start by opening a database.

00:00:28.180 --> 00:00:32.640
Make sure you're in Backstage view, then click
Open.

00:00:32.640 --> 00:00:36.980
And if there are any recently opened files,
they will appear here.

00:00:36.980 --> 00:00:41.750
But if you don't see the one you're looking
for, just click Computer…

00:00:41.750 --> 00:00:44.320
Browse.

00:00:44.320 --> 00:00:48.960
And then you can double-click your file to
open it.

00:00:48.960 --> 00:00:52.840
You may get a warning message here, so if
you trust the source of the database, then

00:00:52.840 --> 00:00:57.030
click Enable Content.

00:00:57.030 --> 00:01:00.830
Earlier I mentioned that Access is a little
bit different from other programs, and that's

00:01:00.830 --> 00:01:05.360
because you're not going to be editing the
database itself, but rather the objects within

00:01:05.360 --> 00:01:06.990
the database.

00:01:06.990 --> 00:01:12.530
Access treats each one of these objects as
separate documents, and each one can be opened,

00:01:12.530 --> 00:01:15.240
saved, and closed individually.

00:01:15.240 --> 00:01:19.509
So you can think of the database as just a
folder of different objects.

00:01:19.509 --> 00:01:22.210
Let's open a few objects.

00:01:22.210 --> 00:01:30.270
Just double-click on each one, and I'm going
to open a table… a query… and I think

00:01:30.270 --> 00:01:36.340
I'll also open a form… and a report.

00:01:36.340 --> 00:01:40.490
Each of these objects now has a tab on the
Document Tabs bar.

00:01:40.490 --> 00:01:44.560
If you make any changes, you'll need to save
the object before you close it.

00:01:44.560 --> 00:01:49.479
You can do that by clicking Save on the Quick
Access Toolbar… and this only saves the

00:01:49.479 --> 00:01:52.810
current object.

00:01:52.810 --> 00:01:58.090
And to close it, you can click the X over
on the right.

00:01:58.090 --> 00:02:03.349
If you want to rename an object, you can just
right-click it from the Navigation pane…

00:02:03.349 --> 00:02:04.789
and select Rename.

00:02:04.789 --> 00:02:11.740
And then type whatever name you want.

00:02:11.740 --> 00:02:19.799
To close the database, click the File tab…
and select Close.

00:02:19.799 --> 00:02:24.099
And in Access, you're not going to be saving
your database because you're saving each object

00:02:24.099 --> 00:02:25.510
individually.

00:02:25.510 --> 00:02:29.500
This may seem a little bit strange at first,
but as long as you remember to think of the

00:02:29.500 --> 00:02:32.810
database as a folder of objects, then you'll
be okay.
