00:00:12.110 --> 00:00:17.110
In this video we're going to talk about opening
and saving databases and objects.

00:00:17.110 --> 00:00:21.829
In Access, this works a little bit differently
from other programs like Word or Excel,

00:00:21.829 --> 00:00:26.430
and it's important that you know how it works
before you start editing databases.

00:00:26.430 --> 00:00:28.930
We'll start by opening a database.

00:00:28.930 --> 00:00:30.860
Make sure you're in Backstage view.

00:00:30.860 --> 00:00:34.440
If there are any recently opened files, they
will

00:00:34.440 --> 00:00:35.440
appear here,

00:00:35.440 --> 00:00:37.870
and you can also click Recent to see more.

00:00:37.870 --> 00:00:39.550
But if you don't see the one you're looking
for,

00:00:39.550 --> 00:00:41.710
just click Open.

00:00:41.710 --> 00:00:43.300
And then you can double-click your file to
open

00:00:43.300 --> 00:00:46.340
it.

00:00:46.340 --> 00:00:48.070
You may get a warning message here,

00:00:48.070 --> 00:00:52.760
so if you trust the source of the database,
then click Enable Content.

00:00:52.760 --> 00:00:54.829
And if you don't want to see the
warning message again,

00:00:54.829 --> 00:00:58.780
then you can click Yes to make it a
Trusted Document.

00:00:58.780 --> 00:01:01.010
Earlier I mentioned that Access is a little
bit

00:01:01.010 --> 00:01:02.370
different from other programs,

00:01:02.370 --> 00:01:05.510
and that's because you're not going to be
editing the database itself,

00:01:05.510 --> 00:01:08.460
but rather the objects within the database.

00:01:08.460 --> 00:01:12.570
Access treats each of these objects as separate
documents,

00:01:12.570 --> 00:01:16.820
and each one can be opened, saved and
closed individually.

00:01:16.820 --> 00:01:19.110
So you can think of the database as just a
folder

00:01:19.110 --> 00:01:21.320
of different objects.

00:01:21.320 --> 00:01:23.180
Let's open a few objects.

00:01:23.180 --> 00:01:24.600
Just double-click on each one.

00:01:24.600 --> 00:01:29.850
I'll open a table, a query,

00:01:29.850 --> 00:01:37.180
and I think I'll also open a form, and a report.

00:01:37.180 --> 00:01:41.500
Each of these objects now has a tab on the
Document Tabs bar.

00:01:41.500 --> 00:01:43.330
If you make any changes, you'll need to Save
the

00:01:43.330 --> 00:01:45.570
object before you close it.

00:01:45.570 --> 00:01:48.550
You can do that by clicking Save on the Quick
Access Toolbar.

00:01:48.550 --> 00:01:52.090
And this only saves the current object.

00:01:52.090 --> 00:01:54.190
And to close it, you can click the 'x' over
on the

00:01:54.190 --> 00:01:57.240
right.

00:01:57.240 --> 00:02:01.920
If you want to rename an object, you can just
right-click the name in the Navigation pane,

00:02:01.920 --> 00:02:04.590
and select Rename.

00:02:04.590 --> 00:02:09.920
And then type whatever name you want.

00:02:09.920 --> 00:02:13.390
To close the database, click the File tab,
and

00:02:13.390 --> 00:02:15.970
select Close Database.

00:02:15.970 --> 00:02:18.670
And in Access, you're not going to be
saving your database

00:02:18.670 --> 00:02:21.470
because you're saving each object individually.

00:02:21.470 --> 00:02:24.061
This may seem a little bit strange at first,
but

00:02:24.061 --> 00:02:25.080
as long as you remember to

00:02:25.080 --> 00:02:52.010
think of the database as a folder of objects,
then you'll be okay.
